trp-SS01-008 VoCaBuLaRy: Ken Aldcroft Solo Guitar Improvisations next previous

VocabularyKen Aldcroft is a mainstay on Toronto's improvising scene, as active a promoter and curator of shows as he is a guitarist. Vocabulary is his first disc of solo guitar improvisations. This disc's defining characteristics are its dry, intimate mix and sense of progression. Aldcroft is expert at creating fine-grained sounds and plugging them into multi-part meditations. His self-generated loops produce some wonderfully subtle textures, such as the slowed-down distortion of "Fish Bowl". Vocabulary is often riveting listening for the dedicated, but is occasionally marred by too-static transitions from one idea to the next in longer songs. There's no pointless music here, though his penchant for tense, tightly plucked guitar gets a little exhausting after fifty minutes. 3/5 stars

trp-007 Ken Aldcroft's Convergence Ensemble "The Great Divide" next previous

Guitarist Aldcroft, always a front-runner in exploring new jazz avenues, unearths his most rewarding finds yet. On this group's debut recording, which moves easily through composed passages, free blowing, textual improv and jazz format allusions he elicits earnest support and fractious commentary as possibilities are posited, then shattered...

trp-004 Ear Contact: George McFetridge/Ken Aldcroft Duo "January Sun" nextprevious

...(Aldcroft) serves as a foil for McFetridge's more expressive gestures, a kind of canvas upon which the pianist can brush bright stripes of feeling. In some paradoxical way, Aldcroft's restraint seems to have freed Mcfetridge's imagination, and the resulting interplay is quite lovely.
